Bikram Yoga is a series of 26 postures and two breathing exercises practised at a temperature of 40 degrees Celsius and 40% humidity. It is a 90-minute class, delivered by a certified Bikram teacher. The Bikram Yoga ‘dialogue’ is utilised by teachers to guide students through the practice, so that the instruction remains the same, no matter which Bikram Yoga teacher is leading the class.

Liz has always been a keen gym goer and has a real passion for health, wellness and fitness. She completed her Bikram Yoga teacher training in 2016 after realising the outstanding benefits of the practice which included greater clarity, strength, patience and increased energy levels.

Since then she has taught in various studios in the UK and United States. And has further still found time to qualify as a Children’s Yoga teacher, Inferno Hot Pilates Teacher and a qualified Health Coach.

Q. IS THIS CLASS FOR ME?

Bikram Yoga is designed for everybody, suitable for any level of fitness and highly recommended for total beginners. The series we teach is Bikram’s beginners Yoga series. It’s a therapeutic sequence of asanas (postures) designed for new students and more experienced practitioners alike. Everyone works to their own level and capabilities. As long as you try the right way, you will improve and become stronger and more flexible. The first thing, as a new student is to simply get used to the heat. Take a break whenever you need one.

Q. WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

The room is very warm, so shorts or leggings are best. Women can wear a cropped top or a sports top and men tend to wear shorts only. The most important thing is you feel comfortable, but most people who practise this class regularly tend to wear as little as possible as you WILL sweat. There are changing cubicles at the studio for before and after class.

Q. WHEN SHOULD I EAT?

Come on an empty stomach. Don't eat anything heavy 2-3 hours before class. Drink plenty of water before and after class. You lose electrolytes, such as magnesium, sodium and potassium, through your sweat and a good natural way to replenish these is coconut water which is available to purchase at the studio.

Q. WHAT IF THE HEAT IS TOO MUCH?

Just sit down and breathe through your nose. The practice becomes cardiovascular and the heart rate increases. New students need to acclimatise to the heat and the best way is to take some time out. Stay in the room and join in with the postures again when you feel ready. Don’t worry; the teacher is there to look after you.

Q. WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

Apart from your yoga kit and dry clothes for after class, you will need a water bottle, a yoga mat and a bath-sized towel to lay over your mat. If you don't have these or would prefer not to carry them, you can hire a mat and towel for £1 per item. If you forget your water bottle you can borrow one of ours for free.

Q. WHAT TIME SHOULD I ARRIVE?

Please arrive 15 minutes before class to get ready for a prompt start.
